It was a chilly December morning, and the Johnson family was busy setting up their Christmas tree. Dad, Kendrick Sr. hung the last ornament and asked, 'Who's ready for some fun in the snow?' The kids, Kendrick Jr., Anna-Louise, and Kenton, shouted with excitement, eager to go outside. But before they could head out, Mom, Robin had some exciting news to share. She smiled and said, 'I'm pregnant, and today we'll find out if the baby is a boy or a girl. Anna-Louise guessed, 'It's a girl!' while Kendrick Jr. insisted, 'It's a boy!' Little Kenton, with wide eyes, asked, 'Where is the baby?' Mom Robin chuckled and explained, 'It's in my tummy, and it will be here in a few short months.' With that, Kendrick Sr. announced, 'Alright everyone, let's head outside for some fun!' The kids cheered and rushed to finish their snowman. Outside, Kendrick Jr. and Anna-Louise worked on the snowman, adding a scarf and a carrot nose. Meanwhile, Kenton lay on the ground, making little angels in the snow. 'Look, I'm making a baby angel,' he giggled. Robin watched her children play and said, 'Aww, Kenton, that's so sweet.' Kenton then began to build a tiny snowman and proudly declared, 'Look, I'm making a baby snowman.' After playing in the snow, the family went inside for hot chocolate and cookies. Robin pulled out a secret envelope while everyone sipped their drinks. Kendrick Sr. asked, 'Alright everyone, who wants to open the envelope?' The kids shouted, 'Me! Me! Me!' Robin smiled and said, 'Let's all open it slowly together.' As they opened the envelope, they saw a tiny card with big blue letters saying, 'It's A BOY!!!' The family hugged each other tightly, and Anna-Louise exclaimed, 'I'm having another brother!'

It was a very special day—Rithwika’s 4th birthday! She woke up with a big smile, her eyes sparkling with excitement. Today was going to be a magical day filled with surprises! Murali and Sachu, her loving parents, had decorated the house beautifully with lots of cute kitten decorations because Rithwika absolutely loved kittens! Just then, the doorbell rang. Rithwika ran to open the door, and standing there was her best friend. Happy Birthday, Rithwika!” her friend said, hugging her. “Yay! You came!” Rithwika cheered, pulling her inside excitedly. But there was one thing Rithwika wished for the most. “I wish Grandma Smitha was here too,” she said with a little sigh. Grandma Smitha lived far away in India, and Rithwika missed her so much. Just then, another DING DONG! This time, it was a big box wrapped in a pink ribbon! It had a note that said: "For My Sweet Kitten Rithwika, with love, Grandma Smitha." Excited, she quickly opened the box. Inside was a soft, fluffy toy kitten with bright blue eyes and a tiny pink nose. “Meow!” It made a little sound when she hugged it. “Oh wow! It’s so cute! Thank you, Grandma!” Rithwika squealed with joy. Her parents turned on the laptop, and Grandma Smitha appeared on the screen, smiling warmly. “Happy Birthday, my dear Rithwika!” she said. “Do you like your gift?” “I love it, Grandma! I will name her Meow-Meow!” Rithwika giggled, cuddling the toy. Her friend clapped and said, “Meow-Meow is so cute! Soon, it was time for the birthday cake. It was the most beautiful cake Rithwika had ever seen—covered in tiny, playful kittens made of frosting! She clapped her hands happily and blew out the candles while everyone cheered. After cake and presents, Rithwika and her friend played with Meow-Meow. Even though Grandma Smitha was far away, she felt close to Rithwika through their video call. Evie and Ari were so excited—they were going camping with their parents! They set up two tents near a big, beautiful forest. Evie and Ari had butterfly catchers. But as soon as they tried to catch one, the butterfly fluttered away. “Let’s follow her!” Ari laughed. They ran after the butterfly, giggling, as it danced through the air. But suddenly, they found themselves deep inside the forest. “Let’s go back,” Evie said. But when they turned around, all they saw were tall trees. “Oh no! I don’t know the way back! Where’s the path?” They started walking, but suddenly, the sky turned gray, and the wind began to blow. Then, little raindrops started falling. “I want to go back to Mama!” Evie cried. “I’m cold and wet.” They shouted Mom, dad, but the rain got stronger, and the sound of raindrops on the leaves was too loud—no one could hear them. Just then, a small, friendly bear appeared. “Come inside my cave!” he said. “You’ll be safe and dry in there.” Evie and Ari quickly ran into the bear’s cozy cave. They waited inside, drunk hot chocolate until the rain stopped and the sun came out again. “How will we find our way back?” Ari wondered. “I have an idea!” said the bear. “My friend the eagle can help!” The eagle agreed. “Hop onto my back! From the sky, you’ll be able to see your tents, and I’ll fly you home.” Evie and Ari climbed onto the eagle’s strong wings, and up they went! From high above, the trees looked tiny, and a soft breeze blew against their faces. “There! I see our tents!” Evie cheered. “Please take us down!” The eagle gently landed right next to their camping spot. “Thank you, eagle!” the kids said as they ran to their parents. Mama and Dad hugged them tight. “We were so worried!” they said. “We’re sorry,” Ari said. “We won’t go into the forest alone again!” That night, under the twinkling stars, Evie and Ari snuggled up in their tent, feeling safe and happy.

2nd Grade Version To understand why the American Revolution happened, we need to look back at the years from 1754 to 1763. During this time, the British and the French were fighting in a war on land that is now part of the United States. This war is called the French and Indian War. The British wanted to control more land, and the French wanted to keep their land. Many Native Americans chose to help either the British or the French during this war. In 1759, British soldiers went to a city called Québec in Canada and won a big battle there. They took over another city called Montréal the next year. After that, there weren't many big battles left between the British and the French in North America. The fighting mostly stopped by 1763 when a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris was signed. Why did the British start taxing the colonists, and why did this make them mad? The British government made laws and taxes that affected the colonists. Many colonists felt proud to be British, but they believed they had rights that the king should protect. They didn't like the Stamp Act, which was a new tax. In Virginia, some leaders, called the House of Burgesses, said that the British Parliament shouldn’t be taxing them. In 1765, the prime minister of Britain was George Grenville. He created the Stamp Act because he needed money to pay for British soldiers in North America. He thought the colonists should help pay for these soldiers who were protecting them. At first, the British leaders were surprised by how upset the colonists were. Grenville did not listen to their complaints and was eventually replaced in 1766. A leader named George Washington fought in the French and Indian War along with the British. He helped lead soldiers against the French. He became a well-known leader and was even elected to help make laws in Virginia.
