Harvey is a 16 year old boy who is working as a newspaper delivery boy for the newspaper company. He gets paid every Thursday. This is his first job and he gets paid by check. Mr. Smith is his boss. Thursday Harvey gets his first paycheck and gets very sad. He was supposed to make 100 dollars but the check is only 70 dollars. Mr. Smith sees that Harvey gets sad and explains to him what deductions are. He starts with federal taxes which is about 8 dollars from Harvey's paycheck. The government collects taxes from all citizens to built bridges and highways and fund the army. He then explains what the social security deduction is for and also, medicare, state and city taxes. At the end Harvey is glad that the government is thinking to save money for him so he gets it when he retires. Sparky is Harvey's dog. He is sad when Harvey is sad and then gets happy at the end when Harvey understands how taxes work.

"Lulu isn’t here," she said, confused. They searched behind the house, under a tree, and around the frozen pond. No sign of Lulu. "Where could she be?" asked Didi, shivering. "Do you think she’s gone forever?" "I hope not," Mimi said sadly. "Lulu is our best friend." As they sat under a big tree feeling down, Mimi suddenly remembered. "Wait! Frogs hibernate in winter!" "What does that mean?" asked Didi. "It means Lulu isn’t gone," Mimi explained. "She’s sleeping through the winter to stay safe from the cold." "She’s just sleeping?" Didi’s eyes widened. "Exactly," Mimi said. Cheering up, the friends decided to make something special for Lulu. They built a snowman outside her house and left a note: "We miss you, Lulu! See you in spring!" John Jr found out about a very important document called the Declaration of Independence and explained to Yuēhàn a little history on it. John Jr explained that America was involved in a Revolutionary War. The Declaration of Independence is the founding document of the United States. On July 4, 1776, it was adopted unanimously by the 56 delegates to the Second Continental Congress, who convened at the Pennsylvania State House, later renamed Independence Hall, in the colonial era capital of Philadelphia. The Committee of Five, including John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Robert R. Livingston, and Roger Sherman, were the ones who had the most influential input into authoring the document. Thomas Jefferson actually wrote the original document the Second Continental Congress then did the editing. The signers of the Declaration of Independence are the nation's Founding Fathers. 3. John Jr explained how the Declaration explains to the world why the Thirteen Colonies regarded themselves as independent states no longer subject to British colonial rule. The Declaration justified the independence of the United States by listing 27 colonial grievances against King George III and by asserting certain natural and legal rights, including a right of revolution. 5. John Jr told Yuēhàn that The Declaration of Independence has proven an impactful statement on human rights, particularly its second sentence: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." 6.
